Souls Without a soul one cannot be a sentient being. The only form and method of achieving a soul is from or through God and his creation. He and only he can give a soul to all those beings that man calls humans. Therefore nothing man creates can ever have a soul. Roy displayed his emotions clearly when he lovingly cradled and kissed Pris dead figure. It is difficult to understand how a “replicant” can have emotions without a soul, as most argue that both come hand in hand. We regard animals as having feelings and emotions but we usual do not associate our common house pet as having a soul. This provides an answer to the theory that emotions and a soul come together. These replicants probably had their own individual emotions programmed in to respond under certain circumstances. However anything is possible in the science fiction world and maybe man on earth will never understand how to create emotional beings. God and only God can distribute souls to humans, and nothing we can do can change that. T. E. Lawrence once wrote, “the living knew themselves just sentient beings on God’s stage.” This statement illustrates that God creates sentient beings to experience the world through the sentience that he provides. Experience God also provided a soul for man to fully experience the world that we live in, physically, mentally and spiritually. Humans don’t just perceive the world, they live, experience, and change it. If replicants experience the world then it is only physically and mentally, but not spiritually. In that way sentience can be described as having a soul and not only being perceptive and conscious to the world. Therefore through Lawrence’s statement we can disprove the theory that replicants are human.
Humanization Slavery has always been used as a method of labor, in a sense one could say that there would always be some form of slavery in society. Throughout time man has struggled with the ethical problems of enslaving others. Therefore, man has sought different forms of slavery to work for him. Robotics is an excellent answer to this slavery problem. The possibilities of replicants and the ethical problems they entail are extremely evident in the Science Fiction world, but as of yet we have not been able to accomplish these feats and observe the problems. However, there has and always will be a growing desire to produce these everyday robotic machines as aesthetically pleasing as possible. To humans undoubtedly the most pleasing objects would be our own representations. Ethically there is no problem putting these machines to work. With the increasing technology, humanization of these robots has begun, and problems arise when our thoughts turn toward the future and we see these replicants. When these beings can think and have feelings, then ethical dilemmas arise. Can it be right to enslave these replicants who can think and feel emotions? The slavery issue that was thought to be disposed of would be re-instituted.
The Genome Genetic research would make it possible to construct a “perfect” child, but ordinary life will affect him/her in ways no one can imagine. It would be fantastic to start life with an unimaginable amount of good luck and a giant head start, with a perfect gene concoction. From then on though, experiences will mold and shape one into a completely different person than what he/she started out as. Most of the world, and America specifically, people believe in the idea of social mobility. Never before has lineage held one person into his or her fixed class or upbringing in society. There has always been means of either ascension or dissension in the cultural ladder. Genealogy shall be the same; one will not be forced to maintain in the place that birth located them. Life’s experiences will thwart any notion of fixed guidelines that genes will instill on one when they are born. (Weinberg)
Prejudice Racism will also be strongly affected by genetic research and improvement. When genealogical research develops enough some will start deciding their children’s genes to be the best characteristics imaginable. Those who cannot afford these procedures or who feel that it is ethically wrong to determine what nature can only predestine will have less than perfect children. This imperfection will definitely result in a new kind of prejudice that will derive from the “perfect” beings and be cast upon the imperfections of society. Some believe the Nazi like supreme race ideals of Hitler will come back to haunt society once again. Insurance companies will stop offering life insurance to unqualified people that do not measure up to a simple DNA test. (Weinberg) This will probably not be the case. If all these new people will be idealistic and more perfect then how will another “Hitler” arise? Prejudices only arise when one group feel as if they are more superior to another group and feel as if they need to prove it, or if they are jealous of that group and want to put that group down. Perfect beings would not need to prove their superiority and certainly would not ever feel any jealousy. Racism then would therefore probably diminish not increase.
Sentient
beings are and will be only those beings who have been created by God and
received a soul. We might one day be able to construct a thinking,
emotional being, although that day seems very far off indeed, however we
will never be able to create a human being from scratch. Genetically,
we are not far from being able to create individuals of certain characteristics.
These beings are humans and will be not unlike the normal everyday humans
we have today, only perhaps luckier. They will not stick firmly to
those traits that they were initially designed with, because life and experience
will mold and shape them like every other human being. Sentience
is not only perception and emotion but also the actual soul itself.
